so there’s that. and we also knocked out three videos for our upcoming series invitation. i am really excited about how these videos will impact people this weekend. if you’re in the charlotte area, get to elevation this weekend. seriously, it will change your life. here are some stills.

there’s no place like it. there aren’t many opportunities even close to it. and you definitely won’t find an internship this demanding anywhere else. being a part of elevation, even for a short amount of time, will change you.

for me, it was seeing over 1,000 people get baptized in two weekends. that revolutionized my heart. not only that, but i had the privilege of capturing dozens of their stories on camera. i was just an intern at that point, but somehow God ordained me to be in that place at that time to hear stories about people’s lives being changed, that in return, it changed mine.

we have three openings for interns coming up in the video department. i can assure you as someone who has been through the process and come out on the other side, you will cherish your time here. if you are interested in being a part of a revolutionary move of God, take a look.

if you are not familiar with the video work at elevation, make sure to check out or stuff here as well. believe me, you want to be a part of it.

ADULTS

well. i’m back at it. i am actually in preproduction of my newest short “ADULTS.” i am planning to film in wisconsin this winter. if you would like to support the film in any way, email jared@jaredhogan.com.

well. i am back from vacation. it was an awesome week. winnie just really seemed to grow up a ton and maria and i got some quality time, including swimming in lake superior and taking walks with our beautiful two month old. maria has a blog i made her for her last birthday, and she’s been struggling with how to find things to write about. finally, i think she came to the conclusion that maybe it wasn’t about recipes or fashion or unique visitors, but instead about remembering. remembering how faithful our God is and the smallest memories, the specks of dust that mark our lives as unique and favored. i am really excited about it. you should check it out.

before we left, i had to work furiously to make it an actual vacation. part of that was finishing up an edit i was really excited about. this is the promo piece for our worship team’s new album “kingdom come.” enjoy.

here’s a look at the trailer for the series of short films.

[below is the promo for the book as well]

and a song to accompany it.

really excited to begin this process.

best movies of two-thousand-nine.

in the spirit of list-making, here is my last list of the first decade of the second millenium. 2009 was pretty “ehh” as far as movies are concerned, but here are some of what i consider to be the high points.

—

10. sin nombre

i watched this on the way to uganda last month. i had heard that actor, now producer gael garcia bernal produced this film. i have a place in my heart for stories that don’t have a happy ending, or really any ending at all. a pretty gut wrenching story. moving on.

—

9. the hurt locker

i wrote a paper about women directors in one of my cinema studies classes my last quarter in school. kathryn bigelow directs a masterpiece here starring the budding jeremy renner.

—

8. (500) days of summer

maria and i saw this together and loved it. seldom are there movies that really really make me want to keep making movies, but this one did. the soundtrack is pitch perfect and the performances are overwhelmingly charming.

—

7. up

pixar just can’t miss. i saw this three times in the theater. maria and i cry every time we watch the life-story-in-five-minutes scene at the beginning. the way they balance heavy themes with kid friendly but tasteful humor is mind boggling, not to mention their always perfect presentation and storytelling craft. needless to say, they set the bar very high.

—

6. avatar

i was looking forward to cameron’s newest venture, but was very surprised with how entertaining it actually was. a fun movie that will change how technology is utilized in visual storytelling forever.

—

5. up in the air

i hated this movie. for the first 20-30 minutes at least. the slick camera movements, the sharp colors, the sheen of the airport. it sounds likeable but comes across obnoxious. trading high-frequency-traveling-tips, having random travel sex, stacking up frequent flyer miles. disregarding all need or merit for family life. it disgusted me. but the notable difference between this and some other movie : it was supposed to. along with clooney’s character, the film began to shift, change, evolve. what was once “sexy” and stylishly uncommitted became insecure and uncertain. the movie wraps up in an intriguing fashion and leaves you a bit breathless. reitman deserves an oscar.

—

4. precious

what an experience. i saw this at the savannah film festival and had the opportunity the sit in on a q&a and meet lee daniels, the director of the film. his sunday school teacher from philadelphia happened to be in the audience and stood up and said “the student has become the master,” followed by a crying jag from lee daniels while on stage. the movie was harsh and shocking. mariah carey and kravitz deliver bizzarely fantastic performances along with star gabourey sidibe who steals the show. a must see, but be prepared to grit your teeth. it stirs the emotions.

—

3. away we go

it is all very relative. especially when it comes to movies. but maria and i just happened to see this movie right after we found out we were pregnant, giving the film an instant leg up. all things considered, however, sam mendes serves up a fantastic portrait of two “f*** ups” trying to figure out what it means to be parents while juggling where to live and raise their soon-to-be-born child. the performances are generous and real and a little alexi murdoch doesn’t hurt. this one will always have a special place in my heart.

—

2. the young victoria

weird, right? for some reason, i just loved it. i have a thing for period pieces, but historically hate anything victorian. i was skeptical going in to it, only going to humor my wife, but ended up falling in love with blunt’s intoxicating performance and the restrained but stellar cinematography. a real dark horse.

—

1. where the wild things are

not the best movie of the year. probably. but so much about it was so good and above all made me want to make movies. so, it had to be my number one. the directing just makes me want to curl up in a ball and cry. the vision, the taste, the style, the right decisions that could have so easily been the wrong decisions, all of it = magical. jonze is a master of his medium. done.

—

a few honorable mentions:

fantastic mr. fox

fun and stylish and a lot of work. but pretty surface level stuff.

—

star trek

surprisingly entertaining, but too many lens flares.

—

an education

great, just not up my ally enough to break top 10.

—

and finally, a punch-list of the movies i wish i’d seen this year.

—

afterschool

—

the white ribbon

—

a serious man

—

moon

—

gomorrah

—

—

they do it again. a must listen.

ps: it is a better listen with a 50% wool / 50% cashmere sweater and a glass of eggnog.

—

the most re-listenable album i have ever heard. especially if you have dreams of the civil war dancing through your head.

—

5. the cave singers // invitation songs

haunting and relaxing. if you have a really indie bbq, play this.

—

4. the antlers // hospice

even more haunting and relaxing.

—

to date, this album is the most visually stimulating i have ever heard. a true gift for a filmmaker.

—

i can’t even. just listen.

—

1. sam amidon // all is well

the best album of the past five years. regardless of how obnoxious sam is on his youtube videos or the amount of drugs he takes, it all leads to a subtle, restrained experience. if i were a musician, i would be mr. amidon. buy this album.

catching up.

i will dedicate an entire post to this one sentence, but for those of you who are not aware, maria and i are having a little baby girl. we found out last friday. more on that later.

i am at the office late trying to focus, but keep getting distracted. maria is over at cheyenne’s for a girl night/twilight screening. so, i decided to catch the video dept up on vimeo. so, here are some videos we’ve done recently.

it is funny because i’ve always wanted to go somewhere far away like that. and to be able to go shoot over there really just blows me away. but it was nothing like i expected. the things i saw and experienced are just now beginning to hit me. we were constantly on the move, traveling from city to city, experience to different experience. it was a peculiar trip, because i really had no time to prepare mentally or emotionally for it. we decided we were going, and three weeks later i was on a plane flying over greenland.

we shot for six days straight, got back on a tuesday and edited a 40 minute short by the following tuesday. we used it as our sermon for week 2 of our huge series here called “kingdom come.” anyway, it was an amazing experience both as a person and as a professional.

i am finishing up some wedding videos, so that means i should be getting my new website [via @ryansworth] within the next few weeks. so there is that to look forward to, at least for me.

be sure to check it out here.

it’s good to be back. maria and i find out if we’re having a little guy or girl on friday. stay tuned.

so, my next short is going to be about the civil war.

order of business:

-watch ken burns doc

-read more shelby foote

-get awesome people on board
